Signal Waste and Recycling is more than just a waste management company. Established in 1989, we are a proud South Australian family business built from hard work, determination, and over 35 years of experience in waste management across private and commercial business throughout Adelaide.
Our core strengths are efficiency, reliability, cost-effectiveness, and trust. We provide commercial waste removal, industrial waste solutions, cardboard recycling, confidential document destruction, liquid waste services, and all kinds of waste disposal and recycling solutions that Adelaide businesses rely on daily. But our story started much smaller.
Where It All Began
In 1975, Mike Bolderoff Snr migrated to Australia and began working on the railway lines operating a machine called a Tamper. Travelling throughout the outback, he noticed many farming properties filled with old machinery and scrap metal that nobody wanted.
Mike saw opportunity where others saw rubbish.
Using an old Holden Ute and tray truck, he began collecting scrap steel and recycling materials by hand from rural farms. Long before modern recycling services existed, Mike was already helping reduce waste while building relationships with local communities.
Eventually Mike and his brother Danny established SW Recycling, where they collected and baled cardboard, paper, bottles, cans, and scrap metal. This was the beginning of what would later become Signal Waste and Recycling — one of Adelaide’s trusted waste management companies.

The Early Days of Commercial Waste and Recycling
As the business grew, Mike ventured into council waste collection and commercial waste services using early side-lift compactors and front lift waste bins. Back then there were no automated trucks or wheelie bin trucks. Every household steel bin was lifted and emptied by hand.
Mike eventually purchased an old International front lift truck and started expanding into commercial waste removal and waste collection for businesses. Cardboard recycling services quickly became a major part of the business as local companies needed reliable removal of paper and cardboard across Adelaide.
In the early years, Mike and his sons built many of the hook lift bins and industrial bins themselves. The family did everything — building bins, driving trucks, servicing customers, and handling repairs.
A True Family Business
Signal Waste has always been a hands-on family operation. While Mike was building the business, Vera was answering phones and handwriting invoices at the kitchen table. Some of those original customers from over 30 years ago are still with us today.
Later, Micheal and Allen Bolderoff joined the business, bringing expertise in truck driving, fabrication, mechanical repairs, front lift waste bin manufacturing, and industrial waste removal coordination. The boys would help build bins during the day, sell waste and recycling services to local businesses, and then jump behind the wheel themselves to collect the commercial waste throughout South Australia.
What started with one truck and handwritten invoices slowly grew into a trusted waste management brand in South Australia servicing thousands of customers.
